Receiving the Holy Spirit
Hearing truth is of no benefit if you cannot interpret what the words of the speaker mean. New creations in Christ are gifted with both a receiver that allows them to hear the Holy Spirit and a transmitter that permits a two-way conversation. Without such supernatural equipment it is not possible to receive the things of the Spirit.
There is no beauty in French prose if one doesn’t know French; there is no truth in Scripture if one doesn’t know God. – LMB
God’s Word delivers the key that unlocks the Narrow Gate to eternal life. Translation is only possible if you know the Speaker personally.
“The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him” – 1 Corinthians 2:14
Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) taught his theology students “to understand current events through a biblical lens”, but also to read the Bible as a disciple of Jesus Christ. The concept of the Bible speaking personally to the reader was unique among German theologians prior to WW II.
The Bible Speaks
Martin Luther once said to a religious Bible critic, “The problem with you is you sit above the Bible and judge it. I sit under the Bible and let it judge me.”
The error of pre-1945 religion in Germany continues in too many churches today. The Bible is not simply a textbook, it is the Living Word of a Real Speaker – and it still speaks personally to those who know God.
Eric Metaxas’ new biography, “Bonhoeffer – Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy”, is an amazing read.
